There is nothing like enjoying the spoils of your hard labor. Especially so when your labor is a handsome hardwood chair. I use a wooden chair at my desk everyday, it’s practically an old friend. None the less my chair isn’t perfect, in-fact none of my furniture items are “perfect.” If it were possible I’d change a little something in each one. I don’t have the money or time to mount an expedition to find the perfect piece to replace each of my furniture items. If only I could make them myself.
I am no buffoon, I can work with my hands. I am no engineer either, I know what I like and if I saw it,it would click. What I needed were blueprints. Believe me, I found them by the truckload for free on the internet. Unfortunately while the plans were brimming with enthusiasm, they lacked clarity. Small details that weren’t obvious at first came apparent once the project was started, conflicting dimensions, parts not on the part list, no instructions to build the parts of the projects not shown in the picture, absentmindedness in general. What is needed is a concise clear blueprint. Blueprints are the key.
To build exactly what you want you will need an index of blueprints, all properly designed and detailed so you can find that special piece. Without such you will get lost in a frustrating maze of incompetence. Talented carpenters who have worked entire lifetimes in their craft often bundle their woodworking plans together to sell on the side. Their skill is shown in the quality of their plans and their years of experience has honed each one to perfection.

Childproofing Your House
When your kids are little, you worry about keeping them fed, dry and warm. They sleep most of the time, and when they don’t, you know exactly where they are and what they’re doing. It’s when they start crawling and then unsteadily walking that you feel like you should have eyes around your head and at least two more hands to keep them safe. Since it’s not possible, though, the best you can do is childproof your house and have band aids ready just in case.
To protect your child you can hire an expert company that will come in and point out what areas of your house are most dangerous for your child, and then put on safety locks, protectors and gates. If you’d rather not spend an enormous amount of money on specialists and childproof your house yourself, you can easily do it and purchase any necessary devices in kid or home improvement stores.
Start with obvious things like childproof door locks, especially on the doors leading outside or to the garage; cabinet door, drawer and closet blockades; toilet lid locks; finger guards for all the doors. If you have big windows or glass sliding doors, make sure to put stickers on them aside from locks, so that the child won’t walk through the glass. If you have blinds, make sure the strings are out of reach by getting on your hands and knees to check how low they could go.
Once you’re down on all four, look for any items that are low enough and could be dangerous. Remove furniture with sharp edges or use soft guards; put away any heavy or glass items; lock up anything that is small enough to be a choking hazard; hide any cables so that your child can’t wrap them around the neck or pull something off the furniture and onto their head, even if it’s just a mini mouse.
Once you take care of the visible dangers, move on to the ones you can’t see or don’t notice since they’re not obvious for adults. Put up stair gates and window guards, remembering that a child could try and fit between the rails so that space also needs to be protected. Use anchors for furniture that could tip over and avoid any furniture on wheels either by removing them or getting additional blockades.
For the protection of your child, as well as your own, make sure the fire and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly and that there is at least one fire extinguisher in the house. Also keep a list of all emergency numbers handy and as soon as possible teach your child to dial 911 and give all the necessary information over the phone.
Childproofing your house is about your kid’s safety, but also about your well being. When you know your child can’t fall off the stairs, choke on your ring or break your pen tablet you’ll feel much better when you have to leave them for a moment when going to the bathroom or signing for a delivery, and your child won’t get stressed out when you yell trying to grab that falling crystal vase because instead of sitting on the coffee table it will be safely locked in the kitchen cabinet.

Elementary Science Fair Projects – Growing Crystals
In this elementary science fair project we are going to look at crystals and we are going to try and grow crystals. In nature we find crystals in all shapes and sizes. We get ones that are considered valuable, like diamonds, and others that are not considered so valuable. All crystals have their own quality and are beautiful. Crystals are easy to grow and are therefore a very suitable elementary science fair project.
The definition of a crystal according to the Oxford Dictionary:
A piece of a homogeneous solid substance having a natural geometrically regular form with symmetrically arranged plane faces. Chemistry: any solid consisting of a symmetrical, ordered, three-dimensional aggregation of atoms or molecules. A clear transparent mineral, especially quartz.
For our elementary science fair project we are going to grow crystals in a gelatin solution. Because heat is going to be used, this science experiment should be done under adult supervision.
What you will need for this experiment:
A 1-pint glass jar
A ¼ cup of table sugar
A ½ Cup of distilled water
0.25 ounce of unflavored gelatin
A small saucepan
Spoon
The method for this elementary science fair project:
First you have to pour the water into your saucepan.
Now you sprinkle the gelatin over the water and allow it to soak for a few minutes.
Place the saucepan on the stove and heat the water while you are stirring to dissolve the gelatin completely in the water.
Continue stirring while you add the sugar.
Continue until the sugar is completely dissolved in the water.
After the solution (what is a solution?) has cooled down for about 5 minutes you have to pour it carefully into your jar.
Now you have to leave the jar undisturbed for at least two weeks.
Make daily observations and write them down carefully.
It might even be a good idea to take photos of your elementary science fair project every day to use in your display. Remember a good display is almost as important as the experiment!
Take note that more than one thing happens at a time with this experiment. What are the two things?
Why is it happening?
If you did this elementary science fair project right, the gelatin in the water will cause the water to set. (Think jello!) The other thing that happens is that after a few days clear crystals form inside the gel and it appears to be suspended throughout the gel. Remember to take photos every day to show how the crystals grow bigger and bigger every day. You can also draw charts to show how the crystals are formed throughout the gel.
Now you also have to be able to explain why it happens:
As you heat the water, more of your solute (that what is dissolved in the water) will dissolve in the water (called your solvent) as would have when the water is cold. Now when the water starts to cool there is more sugar dissolved in the water than would normally have been dissolved in it. Now we get what is called a supersaturated solution.
Now, as the water evaporates your solution becomes even more supersaturated and it becomes unstable, now any disturbance will cause the microscopic molecules of the solute to stick together and form crystals. At first the crystals are too small to be seen but, as they grow they become bigger and visible as they form clumps throughout the gel. The reason for the gel in your elementary science fair project is to keep the crystals suspended and thus ensuring that many crystals form.
For an even better elementary science fair project you can do more than one experiment. Repeat the above but change some of the conditions. See what happens of the solution cools down slower by maybe placing your jar in a big thermos flask. You can also use a bottle with a narrow mouth instead of the jar and see if the slower evaporation of the water makes a difference. You can even make a solution with different kinds of sugar such as sucrose glucose and fructose and see what happens then. The possibilities are endless and this elementary science fair project can be as simple or as involved as you would like.
